The main goal of this study is to identify the obstacles on the execution of strategies in Portuguese companies and to make a comparison with the obstacles recognized in the international literature, i.e., to compare them with other countries. To collect the data from the Portuguese companies a survey was conducted mainly with senior executives and those responsible for the development/implementation of those strategies. To gather data from the international companies, an intensive literature review was conducted, namely to documents that had already identified a list of existing obstacles. After comparing the studies, the main conclusions that were drawn is that there is an approximation of the failure rate in the execution of strategies/strategic objectives verified in Portuguese companies and in companies from other countries. It was also concluded that this failure rate has decreased over the years and is a relevant factor that influences the financial performance of companies. Regarding the obstacles that hinder the effective execution of strategy, the results were somewhat different, while in Portugal the main obstacle is the lack of alignment/coordination between those who develop and those who implement the strategy, in the international study, cultural attitudes are the main reason that hinder an effective execution.
