Abstract

In this investigation, we analyzed the types of leadership within the Society of Jesus and tried to understand how this model contributes for the organizational performance of this religious Order with almost 500 years. By the look of several leadership and organizational performance theories, we were led to the conclusion that the whole Society of Jesus is focused on its mission – what makes all the organizational instruments be defined in the way they take the organization to the same goal. The strong centralization in the internal structure is something necessary to the wide individual autonomy given to each single member of the organization and vice-versa. Having behind the importance of refreshing the organization from its own essence, the awareness of its mission is crucial as well as an individual and collective evaluation, so that each person become more capable and, this way, turn the organization into the best possible. Part of this attitude of exploring the best of each one – the magis –, relies on delegating and giving responsibilities to people, trusting them and making the collaborators feeling truly part of the organization and tools to make a better organization and giving more sense to each one’s single mission.
