Abstract

In a reality where family-owned businesses take on a renewed importance in Portugal as they represent about 70 to 80% of the Portuguese business sector, their existence cannot be underestimated, and they must be treated in a very specific way given the particular characteristics they assume and the challenges they face. The constant change of ownership motivated by the succession of the business to future generations constitutes a complex and delicate process of enormous relevance, capable of affecting the continuity and success of the company under family leadership. In this sense, it is necessary, on the one hand, to understand the particularities of an organization of this nature and, on the other hand, to develop strategies and adequate instruments to face the challenges that are inherent to them.
