Abstract

The present dissertation falls within the scope of Religious History, Historical Theology, and Political Theology, addressing a relatively understudied theme in Portugal: Liberation Theology. It presents three clear vectors of approach: History, Theology, and Politics. The aim is to reflect theologically on the crucial role of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in resisting the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985). For this reflection, three essential aspects were considered, deeply interrelated: 1) the process of Latin Americanization of the Second Vatican Council, 2) the general context associated with the emergence of Liberation Theology (internally diversified), and 3) the articulation between the so-called Popular Church and the Social Revolution.
