The current economic situation obliges the countries and their economies to be increasingly strict in choosing investments where public money should be applied. The need to base the economic, environmental and social feasibility studies on a high technical accuracy, means that it is urgent to realize what are the public investment assessment methodologies existing and where are their application areas. In this sense, the dissertation presented bellow will make a thorough and critical literature review of four methodologies available to assess investment projects, namely: cost-benefit analysis, contingent valuation method, benchmarking studies and economic base theory. In the end, it is expected that it will be possible to assess clearly the application area of each of the methodologies analyzed, so that, in the future, studies will be more stringent, which will contribute to the implementation of investments which have a vital contribution to the promotion of economic growth, environmental sustainability and social equity.
