Abstract

The market relationship, when it gains prevalence on a global scale in a society, tends to generate poverty for a part of the population and an unsustainable management of natural resources. However, there may be situations in which forms of this type of relationship, at a local scale and guided by a solidarity purpose, can help to combat the two problems mentioned above. This is the case of the so-called “social shops”. In this work, an inventory of the social shops created in Portugal until mid-2020 is made as exhaustive as possible. Afterwards, a case study of the Social Shop of Esposende is made, which measures the impact of goods donated to beneficiary families on the respective income, as well as the amount of materials that the store allows to recycle.
