Abstract

This dissertation aims to study journalism through alternative media and answer the question “What are the journalistic roles performed by the portuguese alternative digital media?”. This question comes up due to various factors, like the new technological capabilities, the growing skepticism in the democratic societies towards the mainstream media, and the resulting emergence of the alternative media, as an answer to this skepticism.To answer this question, a case study is conducted on three portuguese alternative digital media (Divergente, Fumaça and Setenta e Quatro). In the theorical part, we analyze media and journalism, journalistic roles, and alternative media. The empirical part of the study is carried out through the case study of the three projects, that compounds three distinct dimensions of analysis. Furthermore, a comparative analysis is carried out based on theconclusions of the three dimensions of analysis. It is concluded, through this study, the performance of the monitorial, the facilitative, and the radical roles of journalism
