Abstract

Life’s celebration for Herberto Helder is only possible through poetry. In the Herbertian universe it holds an extreme power, grounded by the inexhaustible energy of two tensions: the innocence and the demonic spirit. This is what gives us the reading of the twenty-three prose texts presented in Os passos em volta: the uninterrupted presence of different narrators, in continuous alternation, especially the narrator-poet, an indistinct being of the poem, in its absolute immanence. In fact, no one goes unpunished after a meticulous reading of Os passos em volta. It is therefore appropriate to recognize not only the dynamic reality inherent in physical and human geography through which the narrator-poet wandered, but to share the mythic existence of his inner tensions and his uninterrupted escapes, in a permanent, endless restart, of writing itself.
