Padre Joaquim Alves Correia no contexto da restauração da missão espiritana em Portugal

Abstract

This Master's Dissertation in Theology addresses the figure of Father Joaquim Alves Correia, born in Paredes, Porto Diocese, (May 5, 1886) and deceased in the USA (June 1, 1951). As a Spiritan missionary in Africa, an opponent of all totalitarianism, social thinker and university professor in Pittsburgh, Alves Correia is a prominent figure in Portuguese Catholicism in the first half of the twentieth century. Starting from a brief biographical synthesis and historical-spiritual contextualization of the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit, this dissertation entitled "Father Joaquim Alves Correia, in the context of the restoration of the Spiritan mission in Portugal" proposes a3historical, pastoral and doctrinal reflection and revision of his figure, in the sense of renewing and updating the vision of the eminent Portuguese spirit, highlighting, with justice and balance, in the history and charism of the missionaries, and in the socio-political horizon of the New State in which he lived in Portugal, life and the work of Father Joaquim Alves Correia. Alves Correia's social thought and pastoral action is still a permanent challenge to the deepening of ecclesial and social reflection, to Christian renewal and commitment to the poorest and to co-responsibility and lay cooperation in the apostolate and mission of the Church. Alves Correia is a missionary who still today challenges. Nearly seventy years after his death, his life is an appeal to 21st century Christians to heed the signs of the times in order to promote the renewal of the ways and the pastoral care of the Church, keeping alive the attention that the Spirit of God wants to tell them in every moment and in every context.
