Abstract

In this project, our primary intention is to identify the configuration of the concept of person as understood by Hans Urs von Balthasar within the framework of Trinitarian imma-nence, as developed in the author’s theological dramatics, the Theodramatik. A secondary aim is to describe how, within this very notion, the Swiss theologian articulates personal singularity and relational dynamics within the Divine Persons. To achieve this, we begin, in the first chapter, by presenting the life and work of Hans Urs von Balthasar, focusing particularly on his theological Aesthetics, Dramatics, and Logic trilogy, as well as the major influences of other authors on his theological thought. In the second chapter, we survey the elements of Trinitarian immanent theology that Balthasar presents across the various volumes of the Theodramatik. Finally, in the third and concluding chapter of this work, we develop a systematic ac-count of the theology of divine intimacy within the One and Triune God. We then expound upon the individuation of the concept of person within the context of Balthasar’s reflection on divine immanence in his theological dramatics, as well as the way the author articulates personal singularity and relational dynamics within the Divine Persons.
