Abstract

The present critical report is dedicated to presenting a total of eighteen years of teaching experience, in addition to the practice of being a form teacher. The latter challenges one to question the role of a form teacher in the current context of Professional Educational System in Portugal. Throughout the past eighteen years, the Portuguese Educational System has been subject to numerous and profound reforms and changes. One of which is the so called Professional Educational System, which has become more and more a means of educating youngsters who will innovate in the future, thereby contributing to the development of the country. The Secondary Public School system embraced this form of education particularly after the level of obligatory schooling was raised to the age of 18. The second section of this study presents a theoretical discussion, which develops various indispensable concepts associated with a profound understanding of the role of a form teacher. In addition, a historical perspective of the Professional Educational System in Portugal is presented. In conclusion, the manner in which the management board of a school interacts with the form teacher permits the curriculum to be managed in a more efficient and concrete manner. This because, as pedagogical teaching strategies are diversified and implemented in the classroom, as the curriculum is adapted and applied to a particular class and lastly, as a bridge is established between the school and the market place, the form teacher along with the rest of the teaching staff of a particular class, play a vital role in the management of the curriculum put forward by the Ministry of Education. The relationship that a form teacher establishes with the various elements of an educational community, as well as in terms of the implementation of the curriculum, points to the urgent necessity of reconsidering the role that should be occupied by this educational agent in the current school management system.
