Abstract

The current project work is based on two strong convictions – firstly, the Colégio Moderno de S. José in Vila Real will only “survive” if it is clearly marked as an Institution of reference, not only locally but also in the national education system. Some important steps are being taken in order to reach that goal. Therefore, it is important to keep the rhythm of the reforms implemented on the College; – secondly, the strong conviction that the teachers are the privileged authors and the protagonists in the history of the Colégio Moderno de S. José is writing and that each one of us (leaders, teachers, students, parents/educators, auxiliary staff) have the key to the transformation of the School that makes the difference. For this reason, a holistic evaluation of the College has been done to unify the organizational sight (and feel), strongly following and analyzing the College running from different perspectives with a theoretical look on the most relevant literature analysis about the worked issues. To take in consideration: I. The beginning of the registering process of the multiple players within the guidelines of the Colégio Moderno de S. José, through question applications and election of parents and educators representatives for each class; II. Development of a more reflexive and collaborative teaching professional culture; III. Adopting an innovative leadership based on a more active performance of the inter-medium level – aiming for a collective sense of action. This goal was performed by the Serviço de Apoio à Melhoria das Escolas (SAME) of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa that has been coordinating consulting and promoting training actions. Regarding the main results of the project, we highlight the following impacts: i) a degree of a partnership which is establishing increasingly close bonds consistent and effective with the parents and tutors through a membership committed to the Educational Project and an intervention and proactive participation in various activities; ii) The progressive transition from a professional culture somehow individualistic and competitive, to a more global and shared vision, a more participatory and collaborative culture; iii) Implementation of co-responsive leadership dynamics in the search for a continuous improvement of the quality of educational processes as well as their outcomes and in achieving the greatest goals of the College.
