Abstract

This study aims to understand the perceived impact of student participation in a school orchestra. The investigation followed a qualitative methodology by conducting individual interviews, based on a semi-structured interview guide. In a total of 10 participants, perspectives of six students, two teachers and two facilitators of the activity were considered. The data analysis procedure followed a semi-inductive logic of coding and categorization, using the NVIVO software. The results obtained suggest that the most frequent changes perceived with the participation in the orchestra concern interpersonal aspects, namely in relation to cooperation, availability, and comfort in the relationship with the other, creation of new social relationships, trust in others, valuing others and communication. At the level of school engagement, the results show a greater impact in terms of behaviors aimed at learning, followed by the domain of integration in the school and the feeling of pleasure for it and, later, the dimension related to beliefs about intrapersonal skills. It is in the agentic dimension that there are less results from the impact of students’ participation in the orchestra. The main limitations of the study, suggestions for future research and implications for practice are presented.
