Abstract

Introduction: By definition, a cyst is a pathological cavity, which is most commonly filled with liquid or semi-solid material and which is coated by epithelium. Cysts can be classified into epithelial and non-epithelial. Within the group of epithelial cysts are those of odontogenic origin, corresponding to 90% of the cysts that occur in the oral and maxillofacial region. These can occur at any time of life and in the most varied locations, in different forms, clinical and radiographic appearance. Objectives: To assess the prevalence of cystic pathology of odontogenic origin in patients at the University Dental Clinic; characterize the different injuries found according to the sociodemographic aspects of the sample under study; characterize cystic lesions taking into account their typology, location, radiographic appearance and treatment; evaluate the concordance between the clinical diagnosis and the anatomopathological diagnosis. Material and Methods: A descriptive retrospective observational study was carried out of all patients at the University Dental Clinic of the Catholic University of Portugal, with odontogenic cysts, diagnosed and treated between 2012 and 2023, where descriptive and inferential statistical analysis of 11 biopsies were performed. Results: The most affected gender was male with 55% and mean age of 44.50 years. The most common biopsy technique was excisional, representing 100% of the sample. The most biopsied anatomical location was the anterior maxilla (37%) and the most diagnosed pathology was the radicular cyst (64%). Inflammatory odontogenic cysts were more prevalent (82%) than developmental cysts (18%). 82% of the lesions were asymptomatic/radiographic findings. In 100% of the cases, the clinical and anatomopathological diagnoses were concordant. Conclusion: Cystic pathology is an important topic in oral pathology, due to its clinical, radiographic, histological characteristics and mainly because they are pathologies that are mostly asymptomatic and, therefore, with a high potential of going unnoticed by the patient.
