Abstract

In the writings To Theodore, St. John Chrysostom addresses a vehement appeal for conversion in the person of a monk who abandoned the practice of monastic life shortly after having professed. In this context and on the pretext, he develops the fundamental themes of monastic and Christian spirituality, since for Chrysostom the evangelical demand is for everyone. In this appeal, an image of the supremely merciful God, always ready to welcome the sinner, and, at the same time, a proposal of evangelical radicalism as an ideal that is always open, predominates. The objective of this dissertation is to understand how the “serious case” of Teodoro becomes a paradigm and pretext of a spiritual proposal inspired by the Gospel and, as such, still valid today. For this, we had to focus on the thought of Saint John Chrysostom, contextualizing it in the light of the ideals of the monastic life of the 4th century.
