In Portugal, as in other countries, official figures point to an increase in theconsumption of illicit substances, with cocaine standing out as the second most consumedillicit substance, causing serious repercussions on public health in general (Salvado, 2021) . Inthis context, the main objective of the present study is to characterize risk perception, emotional regulation and the reasons associated with cocaine consumption. The absence ofstudies in Portugal specifically focused on this area and the increasing prevalence of thisproblem in society, underpins the interest in investigating cocaine use in a sample of thePortuguese population and its relationship with emotional regulation, risk perception and thereasons for consumption, in order to contribute to a greater knowledge of the problem and tothe development of prevention and intervention programs. The non-probabilistic conveniencesample consisted of 418 young people and adults, aged between 18 and 63 years old, whocompleted the following questionnaires: Sociodemographic questionnaire, the EmotionalRegulation Questionnaire, the Risk Perception Questionnaire and, , the Reasons forConsumption Questionnaire. The results obtained showed that consumers have lower levels ofrisk perception than consumers. There were statistically significant differences according togender, with males having a higher level of consumption, having a lower perception of riskcompared to females. There were statistically significant differences in risk perceptionbetween consumers and non-consumers, with consumers having a lower risk perception. Itwas also possible to understand the importance of developing prevention programs in thisarea.
