Abstract

In today's society, aging is a growing phenomenon both in dimension as well as in lifespan(Coelho, 2017). Such a phenomenon should not, however, be ignored just because itbrings feelings of anguish and sadness, associated with the late phase of life (Teixeira, etal., 2015). Thus, the following study, qualitative in nature, has the general purpose ofunderstanding what the perception of young people on the elderly is and evaluating howstereotypes interfere in intergenerational relationships. The sample f of this study iscomposed by 9 participants, between the ages of 15 and 19 years old, employing thetheoretical saturation method to determine the number of participants. The main resultsshow that in younger generations perspective, the elderly are people who have thecapacity to engage in everyday life activities but also with experience and wisdomacquired along their lifespan. This positive perception seems to be influenced by thesample group connection with their grandparents. It also becomes apparent that despitebeing unfamiliar with the concept of ageism, there is a consensus between young peoplethat the separation between generations is a reality, technology being identified as themain cause for such division. Thus, it seems that stereotypes directed to the elderly inrelation to technology influence the interaction between generations.
