Abstract

Homework is one of the most used teaching tools by the educational community worldwide. Over the last decades, the debate around this topic has polarised opinions, particularly regarding the pros and cons associated with homework. In this research work, we focus on the analysis of parents, teachers and students´perceptions on homework in Portugal and the extent to which some sociodemographic variables may interfere with their opinions. The research basically consists in the development of a tool that would allow us to analyze the impact of homework on students´performance and motivation. Unfortunately, the situation of schools´ closure that happened during the course of this work prevented the full application of this tool. In this sense, in this work we focus on the analysis of primary data collected from a first phase of the study carried out in one of Leiria’s city schools, counting with 32 participants, as well as on the analysis of secondary data collected in the exploratory study “The School´s Mission” with 6570 participants. A huge discrepancy of opinions between the main players, regarding the homework process, was verified. We observed that parents think there is a higher intensity of homework than teachers do. It was also observed that many students who participated in our study recognize the importance of this learning tool, however they are unable to find motivation to perform the tasks.
