This report is the result of the conclusion of the 15th Master's Degree in Nursing with Specialisation in Medical-Surgical Nursing, in the field of Critical Care Nursing, of the Institute of Health Sciences (Porto) - Universidade Católica Portuguesa. It highlights the main contributions of the internships carried out as part of the curricular unit "Estágio Final e Relatório" for the acquisition of the Master's competences and general and specific competences of the Specialist Nurse in Medical-Surgical Critical Care Nursing. The internships were developed in an Intensive Care Unit and in a Haemodialysis Unit, from 5/09/2022 to 26/10/2022 and from 27/10/2022 to 17/12/2022 respectively. The main objectives are: describe safety as a guiding concept in specialised nursing practice; describe the activities developed and planned as part of the internship project; reflect on the activities undertaken in the practice comparing them to the standards governing good practise and scientific evidence; and to analyse the impact of the interventions on clinical practise and self-learning. This report has been prepared using the descriptive and critical-reflective methodology of the developed activities. It is structurally divided into six main chapters. The first chapter contains the introduction, which presents the framework of the curricular unit of the course, the contextualisation of the training camps and the reasons for their selection, the description of the objectives of the report and the methods used to achieve them. The second chapter presents a theoretical framework on the concepts of quality and safety in the context of the specialised nursing intervention. The third chapter provides a brief characterisation of the two hospital services where the internships were conducted. The fourth chapter describes the process of developing common competencies of the specialised nurse practitioner recommended by the Ordem dos Enfermeiros, once they provide continuous improvement of nursing care by ensuring a safe practise environment. The fifth chapter examines the pathway to the acquisition of specific competencies of the Medical-Surgical Specialist Nurse in the care of critically ill patients, in accordance with the regulation of the Ordem dos Enfermeiros, with a reflection on the essential role that this professional plays in ensuring the safety of the patient in emergency situations. Finally, the sixth chapter contains the conclusion, highlighting the professional development based on the achieved objectives, the developed skills and the impact as a future specialist nurse.
