During my professional career, I was an elementary school teacher at two different schools: one in Santo Tirso and another one in São Jorge at Madeira autonomous region. My roles were diverse and included activities in the scope of Pedagical Support, Special Needs Education, as well as Curricular and Extra-Curricular activities. Working with such a range of students with diverse abilities and characteristics, presented a set of challenges of an attractive and responsibility nature. The organization of the educational environment was designed to enhance every person’s learning. This allowed each one’s participation in varied activities and significant projects, leading to knowledge establishment. Given that motivation has been shown to produce enhanced learning, performance and self-confidance, it was important to develop, during my daily practice as a teacher, the skill of self motivation in students. Schools and their teachers provide the right tools for the development of student’s skills and gaining of literacy competency, aiming for lifelong education. In today’s world, reading and writing are the way to answer challenges we are constantly faced with. Therefore, the increasing importance of reading in general society presents schools with new and difficult challenges, such as how to incentivize and motivate their students for reading from an early stage. I highlight team work dynamics between all teachers, the emphasis on cooperation and participation in the scope of developing a common project for the general community. I emphasize the establishment of schools as places of education and culture, of ethos enhancing, transforming schools in distinctive and unique spaces. These schools operate with the aim of establishing partnerships and increase project dynamics with the rest of the community, including projects which valorize and promote reading. To have the opportunity of attending workshops and training sessions on diverse topics was important and enlightening, which was fundamental to my professional development. The need for lifelong learning, through daily reflection and sharing of ideas with other educational professionals has been highlighted.
