The Professional Masters in the medical-surgical area, held at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Centro Regional das Beiras, aims to develop skills to assist patients in critical condition. It provides a cycle of studies lasting three semesters, which includes a curricular theory component, a training period and the preparation of the final report, which will be the subject of public discussion. The training carried out at Hospital São Teotónio EPE, was held under the supervision of the Nurse Teresa Borges (as guiding professor) and a tutor nurse for each module. It was divided into three modules: Module I - Emergency Services to which I was granted the credits for having developed competencies in this area; Module II - Intensive/ Intermediate Care held during the period 5/7/2010 to 31/7/2010 and 30/9/2010 to 6/9/2010 at the Coronary Intensive Care Unit; and Module III - Optional held in the period from 04/10/2010 to 30/11/2010 in Nephrology / Dialysis. The preparation of this final report, besides serving as a tool for evaluation in the context of post graduate specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing, aims to describe the experiences and knowledge acquired through the training periods in response to the large overall goal set for this training period, which was the development of scientific, technical and relational skills in the approach to critical patients. My career allowed me to develop knowledge and skills in various medical and surgical areas. Currently, because of my duties in the Emergency Room, I felt the need to develop expertise in treating critically ill patients, especially those related to continuity of care after initial treatment in the Emergency Room. The learning done in the theoretical context helped to solidify a lot of knowledge. The combination of the revision of literature conducted during each training period and the activities allowed for the acquisition of technical expertise, particularly those related to specific care to patients undergoing treatments such as angioplasty or Hemodialysis; specific relational skills in communication with the Chronic and Critical patient and scientific expertise in various areas of knowledge about heart and kidney failure patients. In summary, the rewarding work done during the training period allowed me to achieve the initial objectives and acquire the skills of an expert nurse
