Abstract

The current dissertation, on Management, Administration and School Organization and specifically on the field of intermediate school leaderships, seeks to delimit the skills profile of a Head of Cycle in Portuguese Basic Education in private schools. In the first part of the dissertation, the role of the Head of Cycle is described, including the emergence of this role and its evolution over time, its legal basis and implementation in the educational system. A conceptual framework of analysis supporting the investigation is then presented, based on recent paradigms of school administration that put human resources management at the center of the debate and view people as a strategic element in organizations. In methodological terms, a tripartite empirical study was designed in order to respond to the research questions. First, a documentary analysis of the legislation on the role being studied was made. In the field, a survey was conducted, by interviewing the main school actors that are interdependently related to the Head of Cycle. At the end, the Behavioral Events Technique was used. The analysis of the collected data highlights the importance of the Head of Cycle in private schools management. This role is viewed as an important element in the achievement of educational quality. The Head of Cycle is expected to have pedagogical ability and to be someone determined, disciplining, skillful in human relations, deeply aligned with the school ideals and dexterous in evaluating and solving problems that arise every day in educational organizations.
