The labor market has undergone a lot of transformations triggered by the application of the concept of flexibility, which led to the emergence of new work formats like contingent work. In Portugal, youth football coaches are a particular example of contingent workers. Despite the high labor and economic instability they face, they assume a leadership role in the clubs where they work. This study intends to know the perceptions of these contingent workers regarding their satisfaction with working conditions, their self-assessment of performance and their motivation. The study uses a quantitative methodology, with self-report questionnaires distributed to youth football coaches from several national sports clubs. The sample consists of 320 participants. The results indicate that satisfaction with working conditions positively influences sports performance and intrinsic motivation, and negatively extrinsic motivation. It was also recorded that intrinsic motivation predicts a more positive perception of sports performance, while extrinsic motivation would have no influence on this variable. Finally, the mediating role of intrinsic motivation in the relationship between satisfaction with working conditions and the perception of sports performance was confirmed. Having been possible, this study corroborates all the hypotheses presented.
