Abstract

Supervision, in Portugal, has been a reality only in the initial formation of teachers and it has been starting to be thought in the interaction of the teacher in classroom context. In the past few years it has become essential to think of Supervision and in the improvement of inherent quality by reference of all the School, to the teachers in the dynamics of the interactions between themselves and the others and in responsibility for the teaching they develop, for the training they get and education they develop. One of the goals of this investigation is to get to know the reality of supervision that underpins in the professional path of teachers, understanding which advantages and disadvantages they attribute to it and getting to know in which contexts they would accept implementing supervision on a regular basis on behalf of professional development and improvement of teaching’s quality. A theoretical framework sustains sustains the study, where we will make reference to some author’s that helped us creating a perspective in our investigation and we will cover the tracks of Portugal’s Education’s History trying to understand the School’s role over time. Based on the transformations occurred by imposition of legislation we seek to understand in what way intermediate leaderships influence school’s organization. It was then opted for case study using diversified methodological techniques (questionnaire/quiz/survey and interviews), enquiring Portuguese and Mathematics teachers different levels of teaching and the leaderships of Schools grouping. Supervision’s potential is centered in the field of possibilities, reacting against the routines of the individualistic culture of the system. And it’s here, between the real and the ideal, in the intermediate space of possibility, that Pedagogical Supervision may or may not have a relevant role in the professional development and in the teaching quality improvement. When adopting a realist perspective, fueled by hope, there’s an appearance of some proposals of implementation of supervision serving the School’s group.
