Abstract

Throughout the 20th century there was an expansion of synthetic materials, among them, acrylic paints, enabling a diversity of applications, easy access and availability for artists. With inevitable impact, in face of these new products and industrial developments, modern and contemporary art becomes the reflection of such an evident challenge for conservator-restorers, presenting significant repercussions in the course of its aging, degradation and conservation process and respective useful life. As such, it becomes relevant to understand the influence that acrylic paints have had on artistic practices since the twentieth century, with special focus on the second half of the century, with the emergence of acrylic emulsions. This research is, as such, a reflection of the intensification of new studies and new approaches within conservation and restoration to deal with the lack of knowledge about works and materials that require specific care and treatment. For these reasons, during the course of the dissertation, studies focused on the chemical cleaning treatment as a highly delicate process for acrylic paintings were developed. Through the Modular Cleaning Program, the microemulsion cleaning system was applied, a safe and effective alternative. The transposition from theory to practice occurred through the applicability of the research with the conservation-restoration intervention of the acrylic painting, Sem Titulo (Onda de Hokusai), by the Grupo Puzzle, 1978.
