Abstract

We started this work with an approach to the evolution and the importance of agriculture as well as its unique and irreplaceable role in societies over the centuries. We have also underlined the relevance of development support policies and common agriculture policies within the European Union, especially the support to developing countries and the protection of European farmers in the world market. Our main goal was to analyse the Common Agricultural Policy model, making an approach to its origins, its goals, as well as its basic principles, including a brief assessment of the effects of these policies during the first years of implementation. We tried to analyse the way the Common Agricultural Policy evolved, the strategic principles that supported its long process of reforms, from its beginning in 1992 until its most recent reform for the period 2014-2020. We identified its main strengths, as well as its major weaknesses, particularly on the quest for answers to today’s challenges, such as globalization, the climate changes and the greatly desired sustainable development. In this context, we also interpreted the balance of the integration of the Portuguese agriculture into the Common Agricultural Policy for over 30 years. Moreover, we demonstrated this evolution with data and reported relevant signs identified in the shift in the economic behaviour of the Agroforestry Complex, reached in the last few decades. We finally concluded this study presenting our conclusions. We believe they can be a humble contribution to the discussion on issues such as the Common Agricultural Policy and the Portuguese example.
