Abstract

In a Europe that is intended to be united and strong, European citizenship and youth participation becomes vital, as are young people who will be responsible for Europe's future. It's that focus on them all hopes of Europe continue to be a place where all citizens can feel safe and belong to the same society. It is this feeling that, despite being citizens born and raised in a country and as such we have a citizenship and there must be the awakening of consciousness that we are citizens of a united and cohesive. To what extent the European Union comes to young people, and the European Union comprising 27 countries, different from each other? The Union reaches young people through programs where young people are invited to participate and influence the policies that are being made. It is through these programs that young people express their opinions and, in some way, influence the direction that policies for young people are taking. This is the case of the Youth in Action, a program of the European Commission to foster a sense of active European citizenship, the development of tolerance and solidarity among young Europeans and their involvement in shaping the future of Europe. In the Portuguese case, seeks to explain how the Youth in Action Programme is to influence the young, how young people are becoming aware about their sense of European citizenship and about their social and political participation. Even if you want to determine how the contact with the various cultures in Europe, is to awaken in young people tolerance for others, and awareness of multiculturalism.
