Abstract

The work that I here present, is defined by the concept of memory and the moment of remembrance - an accident described as recollection, when we remember something or some situation without any apparent explanation, from nowhere. In reality, those ideas, things or events that we recollect, do not reveal themselves without a reason, there is, always, something that elicits ou encourages the exercise of memory. This project, is materialized in a sound art installation, and aims to reveal different qualities of memory and of sound (as a substancial element in its action as a memory encourager). The points of coincidence represent the impalpable and invisible space between my memory and that of others. In the search to make this moment visible, a sound installation was developed, aspiring to extend the idea of the points of coincidence to a physical and abstract format. This moment can only become visible, when is made a link between the observer and the sound installation. The points of coincidence are place markers in the web of signified and signifier, between two or more people, that are ambiguous and simultaneously parallel and coincident. I attempted to make apparent those mental spaces, coincident and parallel, or, the sharing of different memories, by the invisible power of sound. The sound as the catalyzer of memories, an incentive to the act of remembering. I believe it is through the use of this material, that the creation of a bind between the memories of different people is possible and takes place. When the action of recollection is activated, and we are capable of being transported to an archive of our memory, we are taken to the past in the present, that never exists as such. When we hear something that incites or elicits memory, when we deconstruct that sound input, we are creating parallels between what we know, and can be hypothetically found in our mental library, and what we don’t know. The sounds presented in the installation site, are abstract representations of some of my memories (as I do not know any other memories). And, I believe that, by being exposed to those sound-memories, in that moment, the experienced situations can trigger someone else’s memories. So they can become someone else’s, addressed to another memory, but still connected to my own by the same sound. All the other elements present in the installation site, such as the clay peaces, the black curtains that limit the space, or even, the observer, try to describe or reveal, in their essence, certain aspects ou characteristics of a personal notion of memory. These elements try to make visible the “survival marks”, or the points of coincidence between memories. The installation is defined by the shape of a corridor, limited by two black curtains; in the interior of whom there are variant clay peaces suspended at different heights. Some of these peaces carry the sounds that reflect my own memory, and possibly that of other too.
