Green Roofs become a widespread technology that is regulated in many cities or even countries throughout the world, given the extraordinary environmental, economic and social benefits. Portugal still has a long way to go to foster the implementation of this technology. Despite scientific knowledge and interdisciplinary studies throughout the country, governmental awareness at local and national level is still needed. In the course of this research is presented the strategy of the Municipality of Maia for promoting the installation of green roofs. Some steps have already been taken and there is obviously a clear political commitment in this issue, as we can see through several actions implemented to raise the city workers´ awareness and to provide them with specialized training, in different areas of expertise. At the same time, the diagnosis of the city buildings, in order to identify opportunities for extensive green roof implementation, and a project in this area at Quinta da Gruta – Environmental Education Center were carried out. There is still a long way to go, with a demanding financial investment and a long term return. This work presents the ability of the Municipality to drive towards a sustainable vision which is aimed at the future of our cities, with benefits for all us, despite the lack of regulation or legislation on Green Roofs.
