Abstract

This study aimed to analyse coaches' perceptions of the impact of sports practice on children and young people in residential care, considering the benefits observed in athletes, the pedagogical approach adopted, and the relationship established with foster homes. The study adopted a qualitative methodology, with the participation of seven coaches, aged between 19 and 46 years old. A semi-structured interview guide was developed and used, and data analysis was performed using NVivo 14, following a semi-inductive approach. The results highlight the importance of sports for children and young people in residential care, as well as the significant impact that coaches have on their lives. The data show that sports promote increased self-esteem and socialisation among young people. It was also noted that coaches are often perceived as role models and trusted figures, which helps to create positive emotional bonds. Given the implications of this study, we recommend an approach focused on promoting the involvement of children and young people in residential care in sports, with support from their careers.
