The transition from an industrial society to a risk society brought about changes to society in general and to social protection systems in particular. This reconfiguration has made the Third Sector emerge as an area of extreme importance, considering the challenges it has had to face and continues to face in improving the quality and efficiency in the management of social organizations and programs that comprise it. It is precisely this aspect that is relevant to understanding the actions and activity of professional social work in these institutions. Currently, social management challenges social work. It stands as a concern to watch the development of this theme and the growing number of publications and their role. It has been discussed in many professional forums in recent years in many countries. However, this development is not clear in our country and it is this sense that we question whether it is key to the training of professionals in this field. We ask what is the relationship between the professional practices of social workers and social management in the context of the IPSS? Based on the perspectives presented in the literature review, we examine the functions of social management - planning, organizing, directing, and controlling. Using a crosssectional design, we administered a questionnaire to a group of social technical directors of IPSS in the municipality of Braga and found evidence of these practices.
