Theories about leadership aim to analyse the behaviour of leaders, that is, if they are efficient in gaining trust and supporting other organizational actors, leading them to increase both efficiency and productivity, as well as satisfaction, commitment and professional achievement. The leadership style adopted has an impact on the success of school management. It starts with a literature review on leadership styles to frame and illuminate the study of leadership characteristics adopted by school principals. In this sense, the objective is to characterize and identify the leadership practices of a school principal and to verify whether the sociodemographic and professional variables interfere with the perception that teachers and the principal have about the same leadership practices. This is a quantitative, descriptive-correlational study, with a cross-sectional focus, with a sample of 43 participants, of which 93.0% are teachers, with an average age of 43.84 ± 6.70. The data collection instrument used was a questionnaire, with sociodemographic and professional questions and the MLQ-5X by Avolio and Bass (1985), adapted for the Portuguese population by Dias (2007). The results of the study undertaken show that Transformational Leadership is the one that stands out the most, with a greater appreciation of the subdimensions Motivational Inspiration, Idealized (attributed) and Idealized Influence (behaviour). The Transactional Leadership follows, with the participants scoring more in the Contingent Reward sub-dimension. The Laissez-Faire Leadership is the one with the lowest average. The length of service at the School was a variable with a statistically significant interference in Transformational Leadership. The characteristic of the leader most emphasized by the participants was Effectiveness.
