This research is aimed at analyzing the relationship of punitive parental physical beliefs, during the psychosocial development of children attending early childhood school. The study was conducted with a group of 64 children of both sexes, from an IPSS in Braga. We had the collaboration of educators and parents for completing the questionnaires used by us. Throughout the research we found that internal problems and external problems were not associated significantly with the age of the child. No gender differences were identified. We came to the same conclusion regarding the perception of the quality of mother-child relationship, beliefs about physical punishment and PEP. The quality of the relationship mother-son proved not to be associated with internal problems. However, mothers who apparently had a more conflictive relationship with their son or daughter, were those who identified more behavior problems with their son/daughter. We further concluded that both, internal and external problems, did not seem to be associated with physical punishment beliefs nor to PEP. The beliefs about physical punishment proved to be marginally associated with proximity. Thus, mothers who reported less closeness with his / her son / daughter, were those who had more favorable beliefs about physical punishment. The mothers who reported to be less close to their children were those who reported a greater conflict with their children..
