The simultaneous consumption of psychoactive substances, known as polysubstance use, is currently a common and concerning phenomenon. This behavior may stem from various predictors, such as health perception, impulsivity, and self-regulation. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between polysubstance use and psychological factors, specifically health perception, impulsivity, and self-regulation, as well as sociodemographic factors, including gender, age, educational attainment. This study utilized a sample of 187 Portuguese participants, aged between 18 and 55 years (M = 28.49, SD = 10.04), the majority of whom were female (73.8%). The instruments applied were a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Health Perception Questionnaire (SF-8), the Impulsive Behavior Scale (SUPPS-P), and the Self-Regulation Scale. The results revealed positive relationships between self-regulation and polysubstance use. Additionally, significant negative relationships were found between impulsivity and polysubstance use. Regarding self-regulation, no significant relationships with polysubstance use were identified. When analyzing sociodemographic variables, significant differences were found between gender and polysubstance use, with a higher prevalence observed in males. For the remaining variables (age and educational attainment), no significant relationships with polysubstance use were observed. In sum, the results contributed to a better understanding of this issue and the most influential factors in the Portuguese context.
