Abstract

With the recognition of the Portuguese Sign Language (LGP) as the first language of deaf people and the creation of bilingual education in Portugal, several bridges of accessibility and inclusion for deaf people have been built. However, communication and linguistic accessibility challenges remain daily. This research aims to identify whether this is the case in the theoretical and practical preparation and rode code assessments, that is, if deaf people experience obstacles in learning road code, code testing and thus highlighting whether the current process is accessible, fair and profitable. This study also presents a proposal for provision of LGP in the road code manual, the respective practice tests and the code room examination. In order to test whether obstacles are effectively felt as well as whether the proposal is feasible with regard to accessibility, fairness and cost effectiveness, resorted to closed-ended questionnaires and deaf people. This survey was available to anyone who had performed the code review and was different according to the target subgroups: the listener group; the group of deaf people accompanied by code screening by an LGP Interpreter (ILGP); and the group of deaf people unaccompanied by an ILGP. The sample consists of a total of 168 people. The results of this study showed that the proposal for a road code handbook, practical road code tests and the LGP road code exam is accessible, fair and cost effective for deaf people and therefore something which I will aim to achieve in order to promote equal opportunities.
