Abstract

Feminist movements have allowed the emergence of scientific studies that conceptualize gender, impacting various areas of knowledge. However, despite the growing scientific evidence in this area, the invisibility of trans people and the lack of recognition of their specific needs in Portuguese health services are still notorious, contributing to malpractice in the care provided. Considering this feminist premise, this study aimed to understand the impact of policies and recommendations promoting gender equality in the provision of health services to trans people. Thus, interview scripts were constructed based on national (e.g., Estratégia de Saúde para Pessoas LGBTI) and international (e.g., Standards of Care) policies and recommendations, and 13 interviews with health professionals were conducted. The results indicate that the policies and recommendations are being partially put into practice, mainly in the articulation between institutions/services, in the communication with patients, and in the procedures/physical elements of the institutions. However, the reported situations of discrimination and the difficulties in accessing medical procedures indicate that respect for human rights, reflected in access to quality health care, is not being universally ensured in Portuguese health services.
