Abstract

Introduction: Pressure ulcers (PU) are inserted in the group of chronic wounds due to its complicated process and healing time. Mostly associated with elderly patients and bedridden, that due to various internal and external factors are at risk of developing them. Injuries of this kind tend to arise in the bony prominences, particularly in the sacrococcygeal region and in heels. The change in quality of life, taking into account the social isolation, changes of self-image, the discomfort that this wounds cause and the high costs in their treatments that increase exponentially greater the category of PU, have been considered as aspects material associated with these injuries. Objectives: This study aims to identify the prevalence of pressure ulcers in Psychogeriatric Center (PGC), located in Belgium, comprising by 7 Sectors, three of which belong to the Nursing Home and the remaining for to the Hospital. Methodology: This study is a descriptive and cross-sectional quantitative traits. The population includes all patients admitted to the PGC between the years 2007 to 2011. Data collection was done using a computer platform, where the information is entered by health professionals regarding pressure ulcers and later presented a summary of results obtained in 4 quarters in the 7 Sectors of the institution. In this summary are set: number of patients, the percentages of subjects with UP, the percentage of patients at risk for Sector and percentage of patients at risk who developed UP. Results: Based on the data obtained it was possible to determine that the Nursing Home has a prevalence of pressure ulcers than the Hospital with a range between 8,8% and 13,3% in the Nursing Home and between 3,1% and 10,7 % Hospital. Similarly, it was possible to verify that, on the percentage of patients at risk of developing pressure ulcers, the variation in the Nursing Home fluctuated between 44,3% and 54,8%, while in the Hospital between 30,6% and 38,7%. When analyzing the percentage of patients at risk and who developed pressure ulcers, the Hospital has a higher variation (13,8% and 28,4%) compared to the Nursing Homer (9,2% and 20,8%). Analysis by Sector reveals that Sectors 2, 3 and 6 have the highest prevalence of clients with pressure ulcers, this being due to the fact that these Sectors are admitted users with a greater degree of dependence and more generally bedridden or wheelchair / armchair.
