Abstract

Introduction: Wounds are a scourge for many patients, despite knowledge and technological advancements in the treatment of wounds in the last 20 years. Objective: Determine the prevalence and characteristics of the wounds of patients enrolled in Primary Health Care, hospitalized patients and/or enrolled in external consultations in the differentiated health care on the district of Leiria. Methodology: A descriptive and comparative research, developed in a non-probability accidental sample of patients with wounds that are attending the consultation in primary care (691) and consultation / hospitalization in the differentiated care (123) on the District of Leiria. After approval of the ethical committees of these institutions, the instrument, consisting of data relating to: history and risk factors; characterization of wounds; material relief pressure and materials used in their treatment was applied. For data analysis, we used descriptive statistics. Results: Among the main results obtained in the wound, we highlight the following: The prevalence rate of 31.6% is wounded in primary care (CSP) and 21.3% in the Hospital (CSD). Risk factors more frequent where arterial hypertension and type II diabetes. The most common type of wounds, where the traumatic and the surgical wounds. Most clients, undergo treatments in the ambulatory (CSP) and internment (CSD); The majority of patients refer pain during the day and during treatment; the most evident signs of superficial infection are pain and high exudative wound; the most common material used with therapeutic action, was iodine. Conclusion: These results support other national and international research that identified a high prevalence of wounds. There were significant differences in the treatments for the same type of injury, which leads us to consider, lack of clinical guidelines for the prevention and treatment of wounds, which could contribute to an improvement of care.
