Abstract

Despite the great evolution, over the years, in the area of wounds, particularly in the area of pressure ulcer prevention, these continue to represent a major challenge for healthcare professionals and are one of the main reasons responsible for the decrease in the quality of life of our patients and sometimes the synonym of complications in their outcome, increasing the length of hospital stay and also the associated costs, especially for patients in critical condition. A person in a critical situation may become more susceptible to the development of pressure ulcers due to the severity of his/her clinical condition and certain risk factors specific to this population, which is why nurses must be aware of their existence to be able to act preventively. This document appears within the scope of the curricular unit Final Internship and Report of the Master's Course in Medical-Surgical Nursing – Person in Critical Situation. The aim is to demonstrate the path taken to acquire and develop specialist nurse skills and the skills developed for the award of a master's degree in nursing. This report integrates two distinct components. The first, referring to the investigation carried out, a Scoping Review, where I mapped the available scientific evidence on the advantages and disadvantages between the Cubbin-Jackson Scale and the Braden Scale in assessing the risk of pressure ulcers development in people in critical situations, thus developing the competence attributed to the holder of the master's degree. The second component aims to explain the path taken throughout the internship, through the description and critical and reflective analysis of the activities developed with a view to acquiring and developing specialist nurse skills for critical patients and their family, in two different contexts: Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.
