Abstract

This report has been written within the framework of the Nursing Masters degree, specialty training field of Medical-Surgical Nursing and its approach to the Critical Care patient, as laid out by the Catholic University’s Health Sciences Institute. The report aims to describe, analyze and ponder on the acquisition of the skills which are needed in delivering specialized nursing care. The afore-mentioned assessment stems from the path threaded within the setting of na internship and the recognition of professional skills in the nursing field. Working in a multi-purpose emergency department has allowed substantial improvements, many of which were paramount to the development of strategies which promoted the learning process required at this stage. Getting in touch with new work settings directed at critical patient care in a level 3 Intensive Care Unit and in an internationally renowned trauma center are the very core of this training program. Simultaneously, the research process and the need to strengthen evidence-based practice led to the undertaking of a scoping review of a theme which is closely related to the delivery of care to patients in critical conditions: “Interventions directed at the prevention of complications associated with mass transfusion in the critical care setting”. Continuous training as defined by several authors is essential for a change in practice which can translate in gains regarding quality and safety of care delivered to critical patients.
