Abstract

This report, included in the Master's Degree in Music Teaching at the School of Arts of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, is divided into two parts: PART I – Professional Practice Report, which describes the pedagogical practice carried out by me, in the 2021/2022 academic year, at the Escola Profissional Artística do Alto Minho (ARTEAM). In this section, an approach is divided into four chapters: framework, detailed description, evaluation of the path taken and final reflection on learning. PART II – Presentation of the Pedagogical Intervention Project, whose theme is “Prevention of repetitive strain injuries in the practice of the Viola”. This section presents a detailed presentation of the research work, structured into three different aspects: theoretical approach, analysis and final reflection. This project aims to contribute to the discussion of problems related to Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI), resulting from the practice of the Viola, in students at the beginning of their career and, above all, to alert/reinforce the importance of the role of the instrument teacher in preventing these same injuries. Intending to raise awareness among students and teachers that good postural practices and physical and instrumental warming prevent the appearance of injuries. Due to the high physical and psychological demands of work, musicians are at high risk of developing a variety of health risks. One of the main, if not the main, are musculoskeletal injuries caused by repetitive efforts. The main causes of these disorders observed in instrumentalists are overuse, nerve compression and focal dystonia. Identifying the musculoskeletal disorders that most frequently affect younger viola students is essential for defining risk factors, which in turn can help in the development of prevention programs, essential for the implementation of good postural practices, as well as warm-up and stretching exercises. In this study, after a brief bibliographical review, the methodology will be used to collect data through research, from students at the beginning of their career as Viola players, using a closed questionnaire followed by a quantitative analysis.
