Introduction - The preparation and administration of medicines is one major area of responsibility for nurses, being vital to implementation infection control procedures that underlie this action. Objectives - to verify the items that are fulfilled by nurses following the recommendations for prevention and infection control for the preparation intravenous medicines in intra-vascular devices and describes how often the recommendations are completed. Material and Methods - An observational and simple descriptive study was done with a quantitative approach. We observed the practices of 37 nurses in to three different periods, totaling 111 observations. Results - The technique of hand washing with alcohol-based antiseptic solution (ABAS) was more frequently used by nurses before and after administration of medicines. Lower compliance rates were observed in steps that required more incisive and complex movements for effective decontamination of hands in both hand hygiene techniques (water and soap or ABAS). The time each relevant professional waived for the technique was much lower than recommended. The compliance rates hand hygiene obtained were higher after medicine administration (73% e 75,7%). The total compliance rate concerning practices for the prevention of infection in preparation (18,9%) and administration (42,3%) of medicines was lower than expected. The decontamination of the access route with 70% alcohol before medicine administration was observed in about half of the observations (48,6%). Conclusions - The study showed that nurses do not consistently meet all items listed in the recommendations so is essential to promote training/information and audit programs for professionals to know and adhere systematically to recommendations for prevention and control of infection in the use of the medicine.
