Gastrointestinal infection is a major public health problem. This is one of the leadingcauses of child mortality worldwide and the reason for frequent hospitalization inPortugal. School is a very susceptible environment to outbreaks. In this context, nurses play a key role in health promotion through prevention of outbreaks, earlydetection and implementation of control measures.Taking this area of attention as a starting point, the Community Intervention Project“Prevention and management of gastrointestinal infection outbreaks at school” wasdeveloped. It is considered that the accomplishment of this project contributed to improve the articulation of these groups with Sintra’s Public Health Unit, clarifying the articulationcircuits between them. It also promoted teachers' health literacy through theircapacity to prevent and manage an outbreak. The achievement of this report reflects the development of common specialist nursecompetencies, community nurse specialist and master specific nurse competencies.
