Gastrointestinal infection is a major public health problem. This is one of the leadingcauses of child mortality worldwide and the reason for frequent hospitalization inPortugal. School is a very susceptible environment to outbreaks. In this context, nurses play a key role in health promotion through prevention of outbreaks, earlydetection and implementation of control measures.Taking this area of attention as a starting point, the Community Intervention Project“Prevention and management of gastrointestinal infection outbreaks at school” wasdeveloped. This project was part of the activity of the school health managementteam of the Public Health Unit of Sintra’s Health Centers Group and was supportedby the Health Planning methodology and guided by the Betty Neuman SystemsModel. This aimed to contribute to theprevention and management of gastrointestinal infection outbreaks at school.Specific objectives and goals were defined, achieved through the elaboration of aguiding manual and a poster on the prevention and management of gastrointestinalinfection outbreaks, the dissemination of these instruments, the holding of training sessions and, finally, the promotion of continuity of project. It is considered that the accomplishment of this project contributed to improve the articulation of these groups with Sintra’s Public Health Unit, clarifying the articulationcircuits between them. It also promoted teachers' health literacy through theircapacity to prevent and manage an outbreak. The achievement of this report reflects the development of common specialist nursecompetencies, community nurse specialist and master specific nurse competencies.
