Abstract

The present report is part of the Master’s Degree in Nursing, pertaining specifically to the Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing. It aims to critically, and reflectively, analyze the skills’ development and acquisition process required to obtain the title of specialist nurse and, simultaneously, the degree of master. To achieve the development of specialized competencies within my academic training, I carried out the mandatory internship in three clinical contexts. During the internship, I maintained a transversal theme — the aspiration of bronchial secretions in the ventilated adult —, having conducted a Scoping Review on that topic. The aspiration of bronchial secretions in patients submitted to invasive mechanical ventilation is considered a complex and invasive element of Nursing care, requiring a prior assessment of its necessity, since it can cause harm to the Person. Therefore, it is urgent that nurses acquire evidence-based scientific knowledge regarding this procedure, in order to perform it in a safe and effective manner, with minimum risk to the Person who is being subjected to care. This report includes two internship stages, both integrated in the “Internship and Final Report” curricular unit. One of those stages took place in the central emergency service, while the other took place in the central operating room. In the central emergency service, I developed various skills directed towards the Person experiencing an urgency/emergency, always focusing on the respect for the Person’s identity. At the same time, I developed and acquired several competencies that contribute to the promotion of good practices regarding the aspiration of bronchial secretions in the critically ill Person. At the central operating room, I developed skills within the four functional areas of perioperative nursing. On the other hand, I had the opportunity to share my evidence-based scientific knowledge about bronchial secretions aspiration with the remaining members of the multidisciplinary team, especially with anesthesia nurses and anesthesiologists. Additionally, I would like to stress the importance of other elements to the development of specialized competencies — my personal and professional experience, as well as an internship at a multipurpose intensive care unit, integrated in the following subject: “The Person in a Critical Situation and Family — Monitoring and Clinical Decision”. Throughout my academic training, I believe to have acquired technical, scientific, ethical and relational skills, with respect to the provision of specialized Medical-Surgical Nursing care to the critically ill Person.
