Abstract

This Final Internship Report is part of the fifteenth Master's Course in Nursing, with a specialization area in Medical-Surgical Nursing – The Person in Critical Condition, taught at the Instituto de Ciências da Saúde – Porto, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, and its main goal is to focus on the common and specific competences acquired by the Specialist Nurse in the Area of Nursing for the Person in Critical Condition, highlighting the path taken in the Curricular Unit «Final Internship and Report». As such, the same Report comprises the description of two internship contexts: the first took place between the 5 th of September and the 26th of October 2022, in the Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos Polivalente of a Central Hospital in the North of the Country; the second through the 27th of October to the 27th of December 2022, at the Serviço de Urgência Polivalente of the same hospital. Both internship contexts, at the Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos Polivalente and at the Serviço de Urgência Polivalente offered a wide variety of experiences, regarding the complexity of the clinical state of the Person in Critical Condition, at the time of hospitalization and arrival at the Hospital, involving strict surveillance of the same person, and our choice was due to such diversity. Through the description of this diversity, I tried to focus on the activities carried out during the clinical journey, with the aim of demonstrating the scientific, but also human, skills that allowed me to develop, preparing the professional future as a Specialist Nurse in providing health care for the Person in Critical Condition, which is my focus as a trained and Specialized Nurse in this field of studies. Following the theoretical training program, the acquisition of this empirical knowledge was complemented, in the reflection undertaken, with a systematic evidence-based research on the strategies that the specialized nurse should implement to promote effective sleep and rest in a critically ill person admitted to an Intensive Care Unit, and a presentation on the preservation and collection of forensic evidence in the Emergency Department, considered appropriate for substantiating the role of the Specialist Nurse in the mentioned contexts, with the aim of safeguarding the well-being of the critically ill person under their care. The acquired experience has allowed me to develop the necessary skills to provide specialized care with the aim of exercising the role of future medical-surgical nurse, specialized in the assistance of the PCC.
