The companies that are looking for better performance need to formulate a business strategy to reach their strategic goals. One of the alternatives to execute those strategies is the process of mergers and acquisitions. For the formulation of this complex process, there are various authors with diverse opinions as for the needed steps that should be considered. Therefore, the goal of this thesis goes through comparing the theory to the practice of the due steps which should be considered throughout the M&A process. For that purpose, the due correction of literature was done, allowing a general perspective of the M&A concepts and of its historical framework, including an application in Portugal, as well as understanding some of the theories that describe each step of the process. Afterwards, to respond to this issue of investigation, a person with experience in this area and involved in several processes in Clearwater International company was interviewed, allowing thus to compare the steps taken in each stage described by DePamphilis (2011). The obtained results show that the practice is not very distant from the theory presented regarding each stage described throughout the M&A process, but in a certain way in Portugal we still don’t have the due literacy concerning this type of processes, which may have as a consequence the fact that the execution of this strategy is not the most efficient.
