Introduction: Advance care planning is a process that supports adults of any age and health status in understanding and sharing their personal values and preferences concerning future health care. Its main goal is to help ensure that people receive medical care that is consistent and reflects their values, goals and preferences when faced with serious and chronic illness. Despite being a process that promotes respect and personal value, daily clinical practice in Medical Oncology is characterized by a lack of discussion about these issues between health professionals and patients with an oncological disease considered advanced, incurable. Objective: To comprehend the perceptions about advanced care planning of oncologists and their patients in a tertiary cancer center in Portugal. Method: We will develop an exploratory descriptive study based on the principles of qualitative research, collecting data through a semi-structured interview with a sample of oncologists and people diagnosed with advanced oncological disease. Data processing will be carried out using mixed methods, namely inductive thematic analysis for qualitative data and descriptive statistics for quantitative data. Results: The results will be presented and published in a report and based on the findings the authors aim to develop an orientation guide for health professionals reflecting the reality of people with advanced cancer in Portugal, including their desires and goals. Conclusion: With this investigation protocol, we hope to contribute to the development of advanced care planning as an essential tool in the care of cancer patients with advanced disease.
