Abstract

This work aims to analyze the Know Your Customer (KYC) process carried out in financial institutions and the research question that it intends to answer is “What is the importance of information obtained through KYC processes in credit and investment decision-making by financial institutions?”. This final Master's work is in the form of an internship report, which was carried out at BNP Paribas Factor in the Compliance department, in the role of KYC Officer, where tasks directly related to the KYC process and all matters involving it were carried out. To try to answer the research question raised, the illustrative example of BNP Paribas, where the internship was carried out, is used. A semi-structured interview was conducted with the Compliance Director, in which issues relevant to this topic were addressed, and from direct observation of the student in the area in question, as well as from the documentation provided, it was possible to collect data to assess the relevance of the KYC process at BNP Paribas. It was found that from 2014 onwards, after a fine suffered by BNP, KYC was significantly impacted and more relevance was given to this process, through the creation of KYC platforms and greater rigor and resources employed in its process. Thus, it was found, based on the example of BNP Paribas, that KYC has considerable relevance in credit and investment decisions in financial institutions.
