The scientific community suggest that by promoting the literacy in mental health, there will be a contribution to timely raise professional help seeking before the presence of mental health problems (Jorm, 2012; Kelly et al., 2011; Kelly, Jorm & Wright, 2007). Thus, the present study has as its general objective comprehend the role of professional help seeking in relation to the literacy in mental health and psychopathology symptomatology, in university students. The sample was constructed by 228 participants of the 1st cycle of higher education. For the evaluation of the literacy levels in mental health for adults, the Mental Health Literacy for adults - LSMq (Campos, Dias, Duarte, Palha & Veiga, 2014) was used, as well as the Brief Symptom Inventory – BSI (Canavarro, 2007), for the evaluation of psychological symptomatology levels. From the obtained results, it is stressed that the recognition of mental health problems and associated psychological discomfort are essential elements for professional help seeking to occur.
