Autobiographical narratives are an important strand of research into educational practice as they offer the possibility of exploring and analyzing teachers’ professional life and work. The goal of this study is to inquire how I developed my professional “self” as an educator. It is my purpose to explore how some experiences and episodes, selected from different phases of my life as a teacher, best contributed to my professional growth. I analyze the importance of school culture in promoting / inhibiting collaborative working environments and how collaborative practice helped me develop and improve the ability to reflect on and adapt or modify my own way of teaching. I also try to demonstrate the relationship between collaborative work, teachers’ professional development and the enhancement of student learning. Finally I anticipate a model of pedagogical supervision based on collegiality and democratic values that contribute to foster teachers’ professional growth.
